Edward Martyn is the forgotten man of the Irish Literary Revival. His first play The Heather Field was first performed at the Antient Concert Rooms, Dublin, on 9th May 1899. It was the most popular play of the period and was last produced by James Joyce in Zurich in 1919.

'Edward Martyn is an accomplished musician and man of letters.  As a dramatist, he follows the school of Ibsen and therefore occupies a unique position in Ireland, as the dramatists writing for the National Theatre have chiefly devoted their energies to peasant drama' (James Joyce)
