The London Irish Centre is dedicated to achieving the key dignities of adequate housing and income, access to appropriate health services and to social opportunities for older Irish people. At a time when public funds are under pressure, we need your help more than ever.
The Irish who came to London in the decades after the War didn’t enjoy the benefits of third level, or even second level education. They brought their ability and willingness to work – often in brutal and dangerous conditions. They sent billions of pounds home in emigrant remittances – vital to the Irish economy and to the sustenance of families and communities at the time.
These same people are now in old age. Many live in poverty, isolation and loneliness, having lost links with family and friends at home. They suffer disproportionately poor levels of health, being the only immigrant community to suffer deterioration in health, following emigration.
