‘Journey to the Fifth Province’ features actor Donal Cox and Celtic harper Stephanie West in a feast of story, music poetry and emotion. More magical than a play and more personal than a concert, the show has something to say to everyone. On Thursday 16 February it plays at The London Irish Centre, Camden, during a UK tour supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Embassy partnership for this performance is an acknowledgement of the show’s value in reaching out to the generations of Irish people who have uprooted to the UK, re-affirming their identity in challenging times.

Inspired by the very special place story and poems have in Irish tradition, Donal Cox draws on Ireland’s written heritage to open unusual windows on life, calling up compelling stories and characters. Exceptional musician Stephanie West, a holder of the title ‘Harper of all Britain’, provides thrilling music to accompany a journey to what W B Yeats called ‘the deep heart’s core’. Bridie Breen (Manchester, Oct 2011) said: ‘What an outstanding performance. Well deserving of full houses and standing ovations! It took my breath away.’

Though Ireland today comprises just four distinct provinces writers have long made reference to the existence of a fifth located somewhere other than the everyday world. The show invites audiences – with or without an Irish background – to seek for themselves just what and where it might be. The production takes a joyful and perceptive look at where we have come from, where we find ourselves now and what might inspire us in the face of an uncertain future.

Farley, an elderly man, finds himself lying paralysed, and his mind begins
to move back into his past. Decade by decade, Farley recalls his life, with a darkly comic wit. But this is also Dublin’s  story, the city Farley has seen through poverty and prosperity, boom and bust. A bitter-sweet paean to Dublin and a unique meditation on the life of one of its citizens.
