“I Am Of Ireland”
On August 20th 2015, the Irish community in London will gather to celebrate the 150 birth anniversary of Ireland's greatest poet, WB Yeats.
More than any other writer, WB Yeats established the idea of Ireland as an internal, magical imaginative space, a refuge from the world. Our event will celebrate that concept and feature a variety of responses to what it means to be “of Ireland”.
Each performer will read one or more poems, or perform a musical piece, and speak of how they have been inspired by Yeats’s vision.
Performers include Damien Brennan, Immediate Past President of Yeats Society; Aisling Fahy, Young Poet Laureate to London; Irish Senator Susan O’Keeffe, Chair of Yeats2015, a year-long national and international celebration of WB Yeats; Daniel Mulhall, UK Irish Ambassador and award-winning Jazz vocalist Christine Toibin. Also a film-poem produced by Shevaun Wilder for #Yeats2015, featuring actor Michael Gambon. and a recording of WB Yeats himself reading “Inishfree".
Ticket revenue will fund community projects: The London Irish Centre, Creative Cricklewood & Friends of Cricklewood Library.
There will also be poetry gifts: "Poems on the Underground” posters and free ebooks of Orna Ross’s Yeats novel, "Her Secret Rose" for the first 100 tickets sold.
It promises to be an unforgettable night, fusing poetry, music and magic.
Do join us.
Tickets £8 in advance, £10 on door.
